Urban-Inspired Artworks:
What makes this exhibition truly unique is the inclusion of artworks by graffiti writers. These pieces authentically capture the raw and expressive nature of graffiti found on buildings in the streets. By bringing these urban-inspired artworks into the gallery, viewers can experience the gritty and awe-inspiring elements that graffiti art offers. Owning these pieces allows individuals to bring an edgy and vibrant touch to their living spaces.
Among the pieces I submitted for the show, one that holds significant meaning is my painting titled “Girls.” This artwork captures a simple moment from childhood, where the joy of being with friends and cherishing their presence is beautifully portrayed. I intended for this piece to evoke nostalgia and remind viewers of the precious moments of connection and friendship.
Another painting I included in the exhibition is titled “Swim Lesson.” This artwork highlights the importance of swimming, particularly within the African-American community. I wanted to emphasize the healing properties of swimming and the significance of providing youth with the opportunity to learn this life-saving skill. Through this piece, I aimed to inspire and encourage individuals to embrace the water and its transformative power.
Not only was the submitted piece one of my favorites, but the meticulously crafted shadows coincidentally aligned with the sunlight entering the gallery through the skylights.
A Silly Fantasy:
In my painting “Sparty in Paris,” I wanted to showcase the whimsical and playful side of art. This piece creates a fantasy world, incorporating elements from reality while transporting viewers into a realm of imagination. By blending the real and the surreal, I aimed to invite viewers to embrace their own creativity and explore new possibilities.
Raw and Real Stories:
“Detroit Diamond” is a piece that tells a raw and authentic story about life, particularly within an inner city. It reflects the experiences of navigating public schools and the realities of the American school system. This artwork serves as a reminder to youth to dream big and aspire for greatness, despite the challenges they may face. It encourages resilience and highlights the transformative power of education.
The Power of an Artist Collective:
Being part of an artist collective has provided me with a supportive community that nurtures growth and collaboration. The Janice Charach Gallery’s group show, “Emergence,” serves as a platform for the TEAD ONE collective group of artists to showcase our unique voices and perspectives. Through this collaboration, we created a space that fosters creativity and mutual support, allowing our Detroit inspired artwork to connect with the greater community.
Works are on sale, proceeds go to supporting the artists and gallery now through December 6th, 2023.
