In February 2023, as I watched an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations,” I was captivated by what appeared to be Diego Rivera paintings showcased in Pittsburgh. Little did I know that these awe-inspiring murals were actually the work of Maxo Vanka, a Croatian-American artist. Intrigued by this discovery, and fueled by my passion for art, I decided to embark on a summer adventure that would take me there.
Having frequently traveled the Ohio turnpike during my college years in Dayton, I knew Pittsburgh lay conveniently on my route. As spring arrived, I set off on my journey, excited to witness firsthand the murals that had captured my imagination.
Arriving at St. Nicholas Croatian Church, I stood in awe before Vanka’s magnificent artworks. The rich style of illustration and the interplay of light and dark colors immediately drew me in. Completed between 1937 and 1941, these murals portray Croatian history, culture, and the immigrant experience with incredible detail and craftsmanship.
Vanka’s masterful use of light and dark colors adds depth and drama to his creations.
